My good friend Jana Crouse just emailed me for the umpteenth time to post photos of KC.    The poor kid hasn’t gotten nearly enough attention from me in my blog posts, etc., while he is such a big part of my life.    OK, so I guess I’ll try to catch up.   First off, his first word was “Hot” and i taught him that for good reason, his own survival.  This winter i made some really hot fires in the fireplace that would have incinerated him in 5 seconds had he jumped in them.   Testing my theory that kids are smart and learn quickly,  I allowed him to learn the hard way what “hot” really means in physical terms.   I like to play with fire myself and so does Dane.   As per usual i had a book of matches on me and was lighting them and watching them burn while sitting on the mantel.   KC waddled up and I said, “hot’. He held out his hand and said, “hot” too.   Cool, he must know better.   Then he reached for the burning match and I let him touch it… he cried.   I said, see, “hot” and he then took pointed at the matches and in hand signals, said “more”.   OK, now that is my kid.   Gets burnt, it hurts, but the fun is worth the pain.  I get it, l love this kid.

Dane, Emily, and I are all hearing impaired with me being the worst off, then Dane, and Emily slightly.   Kristine, who hears better than anyone I know, learned sign language to teach Dane to speak.  See you can’t make a kid say anything, but you can physically manipulate their hands to make gestures, that related to “words” and that is the easiest way to get a kid to “say his first word”.    KC does the “More” and now “please” and i am sure he says “Da da Da da” refering to his favorite person. 🙂

I wake up with him around 5:30 am, which just became 6:30 am after daylight savings time, empty the dishwasher, feed him breakfast with the dogs.   OK, I feed the dogs and his new verbal word is “eat”.   i call the dogs saying, “Who wants to eat” and he yells… “EEEEAT”.    i put down the dog bowls, each with a cup of food in it, and he either leans down and eats a mouthfull like a dog, or tips over the bowl and eats with his hands.   he loves Iams.    it is a ritual, that well, might have been thwarted if Kristine wanted to wake up with him, but since she is tired from waking up in the middle of the night to appease  the little guy who wants to play then,  I am the guy who decides what he eats in the AM.  it is Iams.   The dogs finish the food faster than KC can fill up, so i put him up on the table and dump some cheerios on the table for him, which is way less exciting for him than the dog food.    I make coffee for Kristine and I, check email, and entertain KC the best I can.

KC loves the backpack we have for him too.   He really gets fired up to go outside for a round of Disc golf in the yard, while in the backpack.   I was thinking of running as part of my training this winter, but decided that why run, when you can play disc golf, and run with a baby on your back as a workout/playtime.   I probably averaged 18-24 holes of disc golf every day all winter, with KC probably averaging 18.   Running up steep hills full speed with a baby on your back isn’t easy.  My legs are way bigger than before and my cardio is in good shape, and my disc golf is quite good too.   so is Dane, and Nicks.

i also give KC a bath just about every day.  I get in the bath with him and always try to convince Kristine to join us, but that is only about 20% of the time.     He is blowing bubbles pretty good, and has learned to make the All-star foam boat do 2160 + rockspins into a seal launch into the water.  cool.   he is pretty good about getting water dumped over his head, but still wimpy about floating on his back.   He tries to save my life after about 45 seconds of me holding my breath under water and doesn’t really like me dissapearing under the bubbles for that long.   We have a cool pinball machine, thanks to Steve, and KC loves watching us play.  i mounted a cam strap to the backboard and we strap him  up against it to watch and he’ll hang there for an hour and have a great time.  All in all, KC is proving to be a great addition to the Jackson family.  dane is awesome with him and so is Emily.     there was no way in hell i would have voted to have another kid, other than Kristine really wanted one, but now i am 100% fired up to have him.   KC rocks.
